What is a Push Back Racking System?

A push back racking system is a high-density storage solution that allows pallets to be stored 2 to 6 deep on each side of an aisle. It operates on a First In, Last Out (FILO) system, meaning the last pallet loaded is the first one retrieved.

This system uses wheeled carts that sit on rails. When a new pallet is added, it pushes the previous one back, exposing the next cart underneath. As pallets are removed, the ones behind automatically slide forward, making retrieval quick and efficient.

This setup combines the space efficiency of drive-in racking with the convenience of single-lane selectivity, making it ideal for warehouses needing maximum storage capacity without sacrificing accessibility.

How Does Push Back Racking Work?

A push back racking system uses a series of wheeled carts on inclined rails to store pallets efficiently. When loading, the forklift places the first pallet on the top cart. As new pallets are added, they push the previous ones back, stacking them in a deep lane.

This continues until the lane is full. When unloading, the process is reversed—each removed pallet allows the ones behind it to automatically slide forward for easy access.

This FILO system is perfect for warehouses with high-volume inventory turnover, maximizing space while keeping retrieval simple and efficient.

Types of Push-Back Racking

Push-back racking comes in two main types: cart-based (shuttle) systems and roller-based systems.

Push-Back with Carts (Shuttles)

Each pallet sits on a wheeled cart that moves along rails. When loading, new pallets push the previous ones back, and when unloading, gravity brings them forward. This system is smooth and stable, ideal for handling heavy loads.

Push-Back with Rollers

This type uses inclined roller beds fixed to the racking structure. Pallets slide back on the rollers when loaded and move forward when removed. This system is simpler and cost-effective, best for warehouses handling lighter or more uniform loads.

Both types offer high-density storage and improve warehouse efficiency. Choosing the right one depends on your load type, weight capacity, and operational needs.

Challenges of Push-Back Racking Systems

Optimizing Push-Back Racking: Strategic Solutions for Maximum Efficiency

While push-back racking excels in high-density storage, like any system, it requires thoughtful consideration. At Space Aid Manufacturing, we transform potential limitations into strategic advantages.

Enhanced Accessibility Through Smart Design

While immediate access is focused on front pallets, we design layouts that optimize pick faces and minimize retrieval times. We can also help you determine if another racking system is better suited for your application.

The Space Aid Advantage

We don’t just acknowledge potential challenges; we engineer solutions that turn them into advantages. Our expertise ensures that your push back pallet rack system is optimized for your unique needs, providing a space-saving, efficient, and reliable storage solution.

Customized Depth for Your Needs

While standard depths exist, we specialize in customized push-back pallet rack systems that can be tailored to your specific storage requirements, ensuring optimal depth for your inventory.

Maximizing Vertical Space Utilization

The slight incline is a design feature, not a drawback. We engineer systems that maximize usable vertical space, ensuring every cubic foot is utilized effectively.

Strategic Inventory Management

FILO is ideal for many applications. We help you implement smart inventory management practices to ensure efficient rotation and minimize potential issues.

Load Stability and Protection

Load integrity is paramount. We design systems that ensure smooth and safe pallet movement, and our experts can advise you on proper pallet loading techniques to prevent damage.

Strategically Optimize Your Warehouse with Advanced Push Back Racking

Don’t settle for standard. Our customized push back pallet rack systems are engineered to maximize your warehouse’s potential and deliver exceptional performance.
